Texas counties Harris and Montgomery are addressing fiscal challenges through new budget proposals and property tax adjustments.

Harris County commissioners are reviewing a proposed $3.1 billion budget for fiscal year 2027. The county is facing a projected $181 million deficit, driven by rising healthcare costs, reduced federal funding, and state-imposed mandates. To address this, officials are considering a property tax increase that could raise the bill for a median-valued homestead by approximately $86.

Montgomery County commissioners approved a $546 million budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year in a 3-2 vote. The budget, which is $38 million higher than the previous year, includes a property tax rate increase from 0.3770 to 0.3860 per $100 valuation. The plan allocates funds for law enforcement pay parity, a 5% raise for all other county employees, and various infrastructure projects to support the region's rapid population growth.
