A high-profile legal battle is unfolding in Dallas, Texas, involving a California couple and their surrogate, McKenna West. The dispute centers on the custody and medical decision-making rights for a newborn boy, whom the biological parents, Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed, call Rumi, and the surrogate calls Gabriel.

The conflict originated when the couple requested to terminate the pregnancy after a 20-week scan revealed the fetus had hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a serious congenital heart defect. West, an Alaska nurse, refused the abortion and relocated to Texas, where most abortions are banned, to carry the pregnancy to term.

Following the birth on August 12, the biological parents obtained a temporary restraining order preventing West from seeing or making medical decisions for the child. West is now seeking sole conservatorship to direct the infant's care. During a recent court hearing, Gilkar testified that the child's condition has worsened following a Norwood Procedure, noting he is in critical condition.

A Dallas judge has extended the temporary restraining order for 14 days while a final ruling on custody and conservatorship is pending.
