A high-profile legal battle is unfolding in Dallas between a California couple, Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed, and their surrogate, McKenna West, over the custody and medical care of a newborn boy.

The infant, referred to as Rumi by the biological parents and Gabriel by the surrogate, was born on August 12 in Texas after West relocated from Alaska to avoid a requested abortion. The child was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a serious congenital heart defect. The dispute has drawn significant attention from political figures and right-to-life groups.

During a recent court hearing, Gilkar and Ahmed testified that the child’s health has declined following a Norwood Procedure, leaving him in critical condition. Meanwhile, West is seeking sole conservatorship to direct the child's medical treatment. A Dallas judge has extended a temporary restraining order for two weeks, preventing West from seeing or making medical decisions for the infant while a final ruling is pending.
