Texas appeals court reduces Alex Jones' Sandy Hook judgment to $1.5 million
A Texas appeals court has unanimously reduced a $50 million judgment against Infowars founder Alex Jones to $1.5 million. The Texas Third Court of Appeals ruled that the original award exceeded the state's statutory cap of $750,000 in punitive damages per plaintiff.
The case was brought by Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, parents of Jesse Lewis, who was killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The court found that the plaintiffs did not provide sufficient evidence that the harassment resulting from Jones's claims that the shooting was a hoax rose to a level that would allow them to bypass the state's damage cap.
While the ruling is a significant legal victory for Jones, it does not affect the separate $1.4 billion defamation judgment against him in Connecticut. Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, have filed for bankruptcy, and legal proceedings regarding the liquidation of his assets continue.
