Texas DPS recovers Cesium‑137 source in Midland County

On July 24‑25 2026, a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Corporal in the Radiological/Nuclear Threat Detection Unit detected a Cesium‑137 (Cs‑137) source near S County Road 1210 in Midland County. The 100‑millicurie sealed source, manufactured in April 1967, was located 6‑8 inches below the surface.

DPS coordinated a safe recovery with the FBI, Texas Department of State Health Services, Midland Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team, Midland Health Department, Midland Emergency Management and Chevron security. Continuous radiological monitoring, hot‑cold zone control and personnel rotations ensured safety. The source was recovered without injury, contamination, or public threat. The operation highlights DPS’s specialized partnerships and the capabilities of its Radiological/Nuclear Threat Detection Unit, which comprises one lieutenant, one sergeant and six corporals stationed across Texas.
