Texas elections feature tight races for governor and Senate
Texas voters are heading to the polls for the November 3 elections, featuring unexpectedly close contests for governor and U.S. Senate. Republican incumbent Greg Abbott is seeking a fourth term against Democrat Gina Hinojosa. In the Senate race, Attorney General Ken Paxton faces Democrat James Talarico.
An Emerson College Polling survey released October 22 indicates the margin between candidates in both races is between two and four percentage points. Early voting, which began October 19, saw nearly 1.5 million participants in the first two days. While initial data from VoteHub suggests a more Democratic profile among early voters compared to 2024, analysts note that Texas does not record voter registration by party, making definitive conclusions premature.
The outcomes are expected to significantly impact immigration policy. Abbott has previously implemented Operation Lone Star and supported SB4, a law allowing state and local police to detain individuals suspected of unauthorized entry. The winners of these offices will hold substantial influence over how border and migration policies are applied in the state.
