Texas faces extreme heat and rising wildfire risks

Texas is experiencing a period of extreme heat, with North Texas specifically facing a stretch of triple-digit temperatures. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, afternoon highs have been forecast between 102 and 106 degrees, significantly exceeding the seasonal average of 96 degrees.

A heat advisory has been in effect due to a persistent high-pressure system. While lower humidity and dew points in the 50s have reduced mugginess, the dry conditions combined with south-southwest winds have increased the risk of wildfires.

The prolonged heat poses several risks, including increased electricity demand as air conditioning systems run more frequently, higher household energy costs, and significant health threats such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Outdoor workers, older adults, and individuals without reliable cooling are particularly vulnerable.
