Big Bend border wall construction temporarily blocked by federal judge

A federal judge in Texas has issued an emergency injunction temporarily halting the Trump administration from constructing a border wall and related infrastructure in the Big Bend region. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone ruled that the administration must stop all construction and ground-disturbing activities in the Big Bend sector, which includes Big Bend National Park, until the ongoing legal dispute is resolved.

The ruling comes in response to a lawsuit brought by a coalition of local landowners, businesses, and environmental groups, including the Center for Biological Diversity. The plaintiffs argue that the administration improperly used legal waivers to bypass environmental and other regulatory statutes to fast-track the project. They contend that the construction would cause serious and irreparable harm to the region's unique desert, mountain, and Rio Grande ecosystems.

The planned infrastructure is part of a broader $46 billion border security initiative that includes 30-foot-tall steel barriers, vehicle barriers, patrol roads, and advanced surveillance technology. While Customs and Border Protection (CBP) defended the project, stating they are confident in their legal authority to secure the border while preserving the landscape, the judge found that the plaintiffs were likely to succeed on the merits of at least one claim and that the balance of public interest favored the injunction.
