Texas Governor Greg Abbott boosts workforce training funding

Governor Greg Abbott announced two major initiatives to expand Texas' workforce development. The state is extending the application deadline for the federal Workforce Pell Grant program, giving colleges and technical schools additional time to submit short‑term certificate and credential programs in high‑demand fields such as construction, health care, information technology and advanced manufacturing. The grant, created under the Working Families Tax Cuts Act, aims to provide affordable training that leads to industry‑recognized credentials and higher‑pay jobs.

In a separate move, Abbott disclosed more than $5.8 million in grant funding for graduate medical and nursing schools to strengthen emergency and trauma care training. Twenty‑four grants from the Emergency and Trauma Care Education Partnership Program will support partnerships between hospitals and graduate programs, expanding the number of physicians and nurses trained in specialties like emergency medicine, pediatric emergency care and surgical critical care. Both actions are administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and are intended to increase workforce capacity across the state.
