Texas Governor Greg Abbott challenges airport Islamic washing station proposal

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered a review of state grants for Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport following a proposal to install Islamic wudu washing stations. Abbott characterized the plan for ritual purification facilities as “illegal religious discrimination” at taxpayer-funded facilities, stating that government-owned airports cannot favor one religion over others.

In response to the governor’s threat to revoke or deny future funding, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) announced it has scrapped the proposal. DFW stated it accelerated its review of the project due to increased public attention and determined it would not proceed because it would not deliver the “originally anticipated operational benefits.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned Abbott’s actions, labeling the controversy an “anti-Muslim political stunt.” While Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport already maintains wudu stations, Abbott has requested an investigation by the U.S. Department of Transportation regarding the potential misuse of state funds.
