Texas Governor race tightens between Abbott and Hinojosa

The Texas gubernatorial race between Republican incumbent Greg Abbott and Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa has become increasingly competitive. While Abbott won his 2022 re-election by more than ten percentage points, recent polling indicates a much tighter contest. Some surveys, such as those from Fox News, show Abbott with a narrow lead, while others, including a New York Times/Siena College poll, show Hinojosa leading with 49% to Abbott’s 46%.

Financial filings reveal significant spending in the race. Abbott has reportedly spent $74 million, leaving his campaign with approximately $18.2 million. Hinojosa has raised $13 million and maintains roughly $4 million in cash on hand.

Democratic leaders are pushing for increased support for Hinojosa to capitalize on her momentum. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has indicated he may contribute an additional $1 million to her campaign, and several Latino Democratic leaders have urged the Democratic Governors Association to make a serious investment in her candidacy, noting that a Hinojosa victory would make her the first Latino governor in Texas history.
