DFW Airport cancels Islamic washing station plans after Governor Abbott's opposition

Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport has canceled plans to install ablution washing stations intended for Muslim passengers following opposition from Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The proposed facilities, designed for wudu (ritual washing), were to be located on the pre-security side of Terminal D.

Governor Abbott characterized the proposal as illegal religious discrimination, stating that “government-owned airports cannot favor one religion over all others.” In response, Abbott has directed a review of all state grants provided to DFW and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, suggesting that funding could be revoked. He has also referred the matter to the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration for investigation.

DFW officials stated that the project was being evaluated for operational benefits, risks, and costs, but ultimately decided not to proceed because it “would not deliver the originally anticipated operational benefits.” An airport spokesperson noted that a design firm had previously made an administrative error by listing the project as privately funded when it was intended to be covered by airport revenue from parking and concessions.
