Texas Hanuman statue sparks religious and political row
A 90-foot statue of the Hindu deity Lord Hanuman, known as the Statue of Union, has become a focal point of political and religious tension in Sugar Land, Texas. The controversy intensified after conservative YouTuber and MAGA activist Jesse Hughes posted on X that the statue would be torn down “when we win,” a remark made ahead of the 2026 US midterm elections.
The statue was consecrated in August 2024 at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple. Since its installation, some Christian conservatives have criticized the monument, describing it as “unChristian.”
In response to Hughes’ comments, Hindu American community members and veterans have expressed outrage. Ruchir Bakshi, a US Army combat veteran, characterized the remarks as a threat against Hinduism and an attack on the faith of an American community. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) also voiced concerns regarding what they described as “open religious bigotry” expressed online.
