Texas highway safety concerns rise during Labor Day weekend

Labor Day weekend remains a period of high risk for traffic accidents in Texas. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that 505 people were killed in traffic crashes nationwide during the 2024 Labor Day holiday period, with one-third of those fatalities involving drunk drivers.

In Texas, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) reported that the 2023 Labor Day weekend saw 334 DUI-alcohol-related crashes, resulting in 14 deaths and 35 serious injuries. Safety experts emphasize the importance of designating sober drivers, using rideshare services, and avoiding distracted driving to mitigate these risks.
