Texas homeowners insurance costs rise 79% since 2020

Texas homeowners insurance premiums have increased by 79% over the last six years, according to data discussed by the Texas House Insurance Committee. Texas Department of Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford reported that average premiums rose from under $2,000 in 2020 to over $3,500 in 2026.

This price surge is attributed to rising home values and increased claim costs, specifically from severe weather. In 2025, wind and hail damage accounted for $5.8 billion in losses across the state, with a high concentration of claims in North Texas. Experts noted that the Dallas-Fort Worth area faces particular challenges due to hail risks and the concentration of property in areas vulnerable to single weather events.

Governor Greg Abbott has indicated a desire for the Texas Legislature to address these rising costs when it convenes in January. Industry experts warned that escalating insurance rates are becoming a significant barrier to homeownership.
