Texas Instruments launches first commercial CAN XL transceiver
Texas Instruments has released the TCAN6062, which is described as the first commercially available CAN XL transceiver. The hardware is designed to support the third generation of the Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol, specifically addressing the increasing data demands of modern industrial and automotive systems.
The TCAN6062 supports data rates of up to 20 Mbit/s and can handle payloads of up to 2,048 bytes per frame. It is intended for use in humanoid robots, industrial machines, human-machine interface (HMI) systems, and automotive safety systems. The transceiver is backward compatible with CAN FD and CAN SIC, allowing for a gradual transition to the CAN XL standard without requiring a complete redesign of existing CAN-based architectures.
Additionally, the device supports TCP/IP tunneling, enabling Ethernet communication over CAN XL. This allows diagnostic information, sensor data, and over-the-air (OTA) updates to be transmitted through a single network. Texas Instruments also participated in the development of the ISO 11898-2:2024 physical layer specifications for the standard.
