Texas investigates UnitedHealth Group over medical care denials

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into UnitedHealth Group, alleging the company engaged in deceptive and unlawful practices to deny medically necessary care to Texans.

The investigation involves Civil Investigative Demands seeking evidence of potential violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. Specific allegations include claims that the company provided financial incentives to nursing homes to avoid or delay transferring patients to hospitals. The probe is also examining whether the company’s coverage decisions constitute the unlawful corporate practice of medicine by overriding clinical judgment.

This inquiry follows recent scrutiny of other major insurers in Texas, including an investigation into Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas regarding prior authorization and care denial procedures. UnitedHealth Group has not provided a formal response to the Texas investigation, though it has previously denied allegations of misconduct in other jurisdictions.
