Texas leaders announce plan for increased oversight of local prosecutors

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, House Speaker Dustin Burrows, and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick have announced plans to increase state oversight of local prosecutors. The leadership aims to implement laws during the next legislative session to hold officials accountable, targeting what they describe as “rogue local prosecutors” who refuse to enforce state law.

The initiative follows Abbott’s proposal to create a new office for a statewide prosecutor. State leaders expressed concern that certain prosecutors are following “soft-on-crime policies,” such as dismissing murder charges or releasing repeat offenders, which they argue compromises public safety.

House Speaker Burrows has established the Texas House Governmental Oversight Select Committee, which is scheduled to hear testimony on September 30. The committee intends to develop reforms to ensure that political ideology does not supersede law enforcement. Officials specifically cited Travis County District Attorney José Garza as an example of a prosecutor whose actions warrant greater scrutiny.
