Texas Longhorns adjust linebacker depth after Ty’Anthony Smith dismissal

The Texas Longhorns are adjusting their defensive lineup following the dismissal of junior linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith. Head coach Steve Sarkisian stated that Smith was dismissed due to conduct detrimental to the team.

To address the vacancy at the MIKE linebacker position, the program is looking to Florida State transfer Justin Cryer. Sarkisian praised Cryer as a “pro’s pro” who has physically prepared himself for the role. Cryer previously earned academic and leadership honors during his time at Florida State.

Additionally, the Longhorns are moving junior safety Jordon Johnson-Rubell to linebacker to provide depth. Johnson-Rubell, who has transitioned from a highly-ranked safety prospect to a core special teams contributor, recently increased his playing weight from 189 to 212 pounds to facilitate the position change.
