Texas Longhorns dismiss linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith

Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed that junior linebacker Ty’Anthony Smith has been dismissed from the program due to “conduct detrimental to the team.” The decision comes during fall camp as the team prepares for the 2026 season.

Smith, a former four-star recruit, was a significant contributor last season, recording 60 tackles and appearing in 12 games, including a standout performance in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Michigan. His departure leaves the Longhorns' linebacker corps thin following the NFL departures of Anthony Hill Jr. and Trey Moore, as well as the transfer of Liona Lefau.

New defensive coordinator Will Muschamp will lead a rebuilt unit. Projected starters and key depth players include Pitt transfer Rasheem Biles, Florida State transfer Justin Cryer, and five-star freshman Tyler Atkinson. During recent scrimmages, freshman Kosi Okpala has also emerged as a notable player, recording an interception return for a touchdown.
