Texas mandates audits for data centers to protect power grid

Texas has implemented new transparency and audit requirements for all proposed data centers to protect the state's power grid. Under an order from Governor Greg Abbott, projects must undergo audits by the Public Utility Commission and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) regarding energy consumption, water usage, tax incentives, and ownership.

Approximately 90% of recent requests to add power to the Texas grid come from data centers, raising concerns about grid reliability. A report from the think tank Energy Innovation suggests that utilizing renewable energy sources could be more cost-effective than fossil fuels, potentially reducing national electricity costs by approximately 17% and saving $5 billion compared to fossil fuel pathways.

AI infrastructure provider Crusoe Cloud has publicly supported these transparency mandates. The company utilizes an 'energy-first' approach, including on-site generation and closed-loop cooling systems to minimize strain on local utilities and reduce water consumption. Crusoe reported that its 200-megawatt facility uses less water annually than ten average U.S. households.
