Texas National Guard reinforces Rio Bravo border with concertina wire

The Texas National Guard has reinforced several sections of the U.S. side of the Rio Bravo with concertina wire. This action is part of Operation Lone Star, a state initiative launched in March 2021 to combat irregular migration and transnational drug trafficking.

While barbed wire was already present in various locations, authorities have strengthened existing barriers, including areas already equipped with metal mesh. These efforts complement other state measures, such as the deployment of floating buoy barriers and the presence of the Texas National Guard alongside federal Border Patrol agents.

Human rights and migrant advocacy organizations have expressed opposition to these barriers, stating they jeopardize the lives and physical integrity of individuals attempting to cross the river. Reports indicate that migrants have become trapped within the wire during crossing attempts.
