Texas nonprofit hospitals accused of widespread misspending
A report released by the policy nonprofit Save Our States alleges widespread fraud, waste, and abuse of funding within three tax-exempt healthcare systems in Texas. The watchdog group claims these nonprofit hospitals are operating more like large businesses than community charities, utilizing government subsidies and tax breaks to fund executive perks, foreign investments, luxury art collections, and sports sponsorships.
The analysis, based on organization 990 forms, specifically highlights Memorial Hermann Health System. As one of the largest nonprofit networks in Southeast Texas, the report alleges the system uses millions from federal programs to pay dozens of executives seven-figure salaries and engages in billions of dollars in foreign investments and sponsorships. Save Our States Executive Director Trent England has called on lawmakers to investigate these systems, stating that tax benefits intended for patient care are being diverted to extravagance.
