Texas organic agriculture reaches $1.55 billion in output
Texas is experiencing significant growth in its organic agriculture sector, driven by collaborations between growers and Texas A&M AgriLife. The state currently leads the nation in organic production for dairy, cotton, and peanuts.
The organic industry in Texas is estimated to have an output of $1.55 billion. This includes 399 certified producers managing 695,506 organic acres, supported by 726 certified handlers who manage the transportation, storage, and processing of organic commodities.
Experts attribute this expansion to increased education, research, and improved communication networks that connect producers, handlers, and researchers. Bob Whitney, a specialist with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, noted that the state has added approximately 100 producers and 400 handlers during his tenure in the industry.
