Texas Parents Sue to Remove Ten Commandments Posters from Public Schools

Three parents filed a lawsuit in Harris County state court seeking to have Ten Commandments posters removed from Texas public‑school classrooms. The suit argues that the displays, required by Senate Bill 10, violate the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1999 and the voter‑approved Proposition 15 parental‑rights amendment. Plaintiffs claim the posters “substantially interfere” with their children’s free exercise of religion and their right to be raised free of state‑sponsored religion.

Attorney General Ken Paxton defended the displays as part of U.S. history instruction, while plaintiff Emily Roth said, “I never intended to talk to my children this young about the Ten Commandments.” The lawsuit seeks a court order before the school year begins in August. Earlier federal challenges were rejected, and the Fifth Circuit upheld the state law earlier this year.
