Texas politicians target Sharia law amid rising religious debate

Republican politicians in Texas, including Senator Ted Cruz and Governor Greg Abbott, have intensified rhetoric regarding Sharia law. During a recent convention in Dallas, Cruz stated that Sharia law has no place in America. Governor Abbott has vowed to fully ban the religious code in Texas and has directed officials to investigate entities in North Texas suspected of operating as Sharia tribunals.

In response to these political moves, Muslim American civic leaders and scholars are defending the practice of Sharia in the United States. Sabeel Ahmed, director of the outreach project GainPeace, argues that Sharia is often misunderstood, describing it as a guide for faith, justice, and mercy rather than a coercive system of punishment.

The debate has reached the federal level, with the House Judiciary Subcommittee holding hearings on the relationship between political Islam, Sharia law, and the U.S. Constitution. Currently, twelve states have passed legislation aimed at restricting or banning Sharia law to prevent perceived conflicts with constitutional rights.
