Lorenzo Salgado Araujo shooting triggers Houston protests, court orders

On July 7, 2026, an ICE agent shot and killed 52‑year‑old Mexican immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas while he was driving a construction crew to a job site. ICE initially claimed he attempted to ram the officer; a Texas federal prosecutor later said there is no record of a collision between his van and an ICE vehicle.

The killing sparked protests in several cities. Hundreds gathered at Houston’s Ervan Chew Park, briefly shutting down a bridge, and displayed banners reading “Abolish ICE” and “Justice for Lorenzo.” Similar vigils were held in Durham, North Carolina, and other locations across the United States.

Legal actions followed. A federal judge ordered the Department of Homeland Security not to deport witness Jose Trinidad Rojas Pliego and other passengers filed comparable petitions. In Washington, close to 40 senators sent a letter to DHS demanding ICE reforms, including mandatory body‑camera use and greater accountability.

Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum called for an impartial investigation, raised the case with the U.S. ambassador, and urged the United Nations human‑rights office to intervene, while activists continue to mobilize against ICE’s traffic‑stop practices.
