Texas public schools show modest improvement in 2026 A-F ratings

Texas public schools showed modest improvements in the state’s 2026 A-F accountability ratings, according to data released by the Texas Education Agency. Approximately 24% of school districts and campuses improved their letter grades compared to 2025. Statewide, 85% of rated campuses earned a grade of C or higher, which the state defines as acceptable academic performance.

In the San Antonio area, the number of failing school districts in Bexar County decreased from three to one, with five districts improving by a full letter grade. In Houston, the state’s largest district, Houston ISD earned an overall grade of B, showing significant progress since the state assumed control of the district in 2023.

The rating system evaluates performance based on standardized test scores, student academic growth, and the ability to close achievement gaps for underserved students. While some critics argue the system relies too heavily on state assessments, supporters, including Education Commissioner Mike Morath, suggest the ratings help identify areas for improvement and track progress over time.
