Camp Mystic faces criminal probe over 27 flood deaths in Texas

Camp Mystic Texas Rangers Guadalupe River flood manslaughter investigation negligent homicide

The Texas Rangers are conducting a criminal investigation into Camp Mystic following a devastating flood on July 4, 2025, which killed 25 campers and two teenage counselors. Court documents reveal that investigators are seeking search warrants to access the electronic communications of the camp’s owners and staff. Authorities are exploring potential charges including manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, child abandonment, and deadly conduct.

Texas Ranger Brant Johnston stated in an affidavit that the camp had inadequate emergency plans, failed to conduct necessary drills, and lacked sufficient adult supervision in some cabins. Investigators noted that leadership failed to evacuate children from low-lying areas despite monitoring late-night flood warnings. The flood, which occurred when the Guadalupe River overflowed, resulted in at least 136 total deaths along the river.

Camp owner Richard Eastland also died in the flood. The camp, which had been a long-standing institution for families, has filed for bankruptcy reorganization and has withdrawn its application to reopen. In addition to the criminal probe, more than a dozen families are pursuing civil lawsuits against the camp and its leadership for negligence.
