Texas Rangers sign Cuban pitcher Edenis Cruz
Cuban right-handed pitcher Edenis Cruz has reached an agreement to sign a $145,000 contract with the Texas Rangers. The 19-year-old, who stands 6-foot-4, is noted for a fastball ranging between 91 and 94 mph and strong strike-zone command.
Cruz and his twin brother, Edurman, departed Cuba in June to relocate to the Dominican Republic, establishing residency to meet international eligibility requirements. Cruz has been training at the Academia Dan Reverte in San Pedro de Macorís to refine his mechanics. His performance in the Cuban national championship and the U-18 Baseball World Cup in Japan previously drew significant interest from Major League Baseball scouts.
In a related development, Cuban player Anthony Calderón has reportedly reached an agreement with the Atlanta Braves, pending a medical examination. Both players have distanced themselves from the Cuban Baseball Federation, which has previously sought compensation from players who leave the island to pursue professional careers abroad.
