Texas Rep. Brian Harrison calls for special session on Sharia law

Texas State Representative Brian Harrison is calling for a special session of the Texas Legislature to address what he describes as the growing threat of Sharia law in the state. Harrison cited the existence of two functioning Sharia tribunals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and the McKinney City Council’s recent approval of a mosque relocation as primary concerns.

While Harrison acknowledged Governor Greg Abbott’s designation of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as foreign terrorist organizations, he questioned why these groups are still permitted to operate and receive funds within Texas. He has proposed implementing stricter reviews of the state grant-making process, alleging evidence that state funds have been administered to organizations with ties to terrorism through programs managed by the governor’s office.
