Jamaal Howard executed in Texas via lethal injection

Jamaal Howard, 46, was executed via lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit in Texas on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. He was pronounced dead at 8:03 p.m. after receiving a dose of pentobarbital. Howard had been convicted of the 2000 murder of Vickie Swartout, a convenience store clerk in Silsbee, Texas, during a robbery.

This execution marks the 30th death penalty in the United States in 2026 and the seventh in Texas this year. It is also the first completed execution in the U.S. since Christa Pike survived a botched lethal injection attempt in Tennessee on September 30. Howard's defense attorneys had unsuccessfully sought to halt the procedure, arguing that the quality of the pentobarbital used in Texas could pose similar risks to those seen in the Pike case. They also contended that Howard's intellectual disability should exempt him from the death penalty, a claim rejected by both state and federal courts.

Before the injection, Howard apologized to the family of Vickie Swartout, who were watching from a nearby room. He expressed regret for his actions and stated he had found peace through his faith.
