Texas schools begin new year with expanded Pre-K and first voucher recipients

The 2026-27 school year has commenced in Texas, marked by significant policy shifts in both public and private education sectors.

In Dallas, Dallas ISD is implementing several changes for its nearly 130,000 students. The district has introduced a new student badge system that integrates transportation, meals, library services, and athletic event access. Additionally, the district is now offering free Pre-K services to all three- and four-year-old students, removing previous income requirements in an effort to reverse recent enrollment declines.

Across the state, the first group of students is utilizing the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) vouchers. This program, championed by Governor Greg Abbott, allows state taxpayer funds to assist families with private school tuition. At the Dyslexia School of Houston, voucher funds are enabling students with learning disabilities to access full-time specialized education and therapy that was previously only available through part-time or after-school programs. According to the Texas Education Agency, approximately 25% of voucher recipients have a qualifying disability, with some students receiving upwards of $30,000 in support.
