Texas schools implement new safety rules for large extracurricular events

The Texas Education Agency has implemented new statewide safety requirements for school extracurricular activities, effective September 23. These regulations mandate that school systems develop site-specific written security and medical plans for any event expected to have more than 250 attendees.

These plans must address various safety concerns, including emergency communication, crowd control, evacuation procedures, severe weather preparedness, and injury response. Additionally, schools are required to have an on-site incident commander and ensure that emergency equipment, such as automated external defibrillators (AEDs), is available and properly maintained.

For larger gatherings, specific staffing requirements apply. Events exceeding 1,000 attendees must provide at least one uniformed peace officer for every 1,000 people. Schools are also directed to consider armed security for events with more than 250 people and must provide additional uniformed officers for high-risk events, such as intense rivalry games, where there is a greater potential for confrontation.
