Texas Schools Required to Use WBGT Readings Under New UIL Heat Safety Rules

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) has mandated that Texas high schools take Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measurements before and during outdoor athletic practices and marching band activities. The rule, which took effect on August 1, requires a WBGT reading within 15 minutes of the start of practice and continued monitoring at 30‑minute intervals.

If readings indicate dangerous heat stress, schools must provide additional water, cooling breaks, limit protective equipment, shorten or move practices indoors, and otherwise adjust activities to protect students from heat‑related illnesses.
