Texas Senate race becomes most expensive non-presidential election in US history

The United States Senate race in Texas has become the most expensive non-presidential election ever recorded, with advertising expenditures exceeding $544 million according to data from AdImpact. This total encompasses spending from the primaries, the runoff between Republican Ken Paxton and incumbent Senator John Cornyn, and the general election between Paxton and Democrat James Talarico.

Republicans have accounted for more than two-thirds of the total spending, contributing approximately $386 million, while Democrats have spent roughly $158 million. This surpasses the previous record held by the 2024 Ohio Senate race, which saw nearly $543 million in advertising costs.

Political action committees linked to the digital asset sector are also heavily involved. The Digital Freedom Fund, founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, reported spending over $81,000 on direct mail to support Ken Paxton and attack James Talarico. Additionally, the Fairshake committee has reported significant expenditures in various races, including Ohio and Nebraska, as the industry monitors potential legislative outcomes regarding digital asset market clarity.
