Texas Senate race faces FEC complaint over dark money allegations

The Texas Senate race between Republican nominee Ken Paxton and Democratic candidate James Talarico has become a focal point for controversy regarding campaign finance and dark money. Following a record-breaking GOP primary where Paxton defeated incumbent John Cornyn with the endorsement of Donald Trump, the campaign has entered a high-stakes general election phase.

James Talarico’s campaign has filed a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), alleging that Paxton and his treasurer, John Plishka, violated federal rules. The complaint centers on Preserve Texas, Inc., a Virginia-based nonprofit incorporated by Plishka. Talarico’s campaign alleges that Preserve Texas, which is not registered as a political committee, funneled over $1 million to a super PAC supporting Paxton, effectively shielding donors from public scrutiny and bypassing federal contribution limits.

On the Republican side, the party’s fundraising apparatus is facing scrutiny as the race tightens. While Lone Star Liberty PAC has launched a $15 million opposition campaign against Talarico, questions remain regarding the level of support from major entities like MAGA Inc., the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and the Senate Leadership Fund.
