Texas Southern students protest basketball coaching hire

Students, athletes, and alumni at Texas Southern University held a protest on campus to oppose the administration's plan to hire Corey Lowery as the new men's basketball head coach.

The demonstrators are advocating for the retention of interim head coach Shyrone Chatman, who has led the program since Johnny Jones departed for LSU in April. Supporters noted that Chatman recruited the current roster during the offseason.

University President JW Crawford has recommended Lowery, an assistant at Seton Hall, for the position. The recommendation follows a period of uncertainty, as reports indicated Lowery had previously failed to receive approval from two Board of Regents committees. The Board of Regents is scheduled to meet to consider the hiring recommendation.
