Texas sued over 500,000 unprocessed voter registrations
Voting rights groups, including the League of Women Voters of Texas and MOVE Texas Civic Fund, have filed a lawsuit against the state of Texas following a massive backlog of voter registration applications. The lawsuit alleges that more than 500,000 registration applications and updates submitted through the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) online driver’s license portal went unprocessed due to a software update error.
The plaintiffs are seeking to enforce a 2021 settlement that requires the state to maintain a functional process for residents to register to vote while completing online identification transactions. The error reportedly affected records dating back to October 2025. While the lawsuit names the Secretary of State and the DPS as defendants, election officials have reported that they have worked to clear the backlog of hundreds of thousands of records ahead of upcoming election deadlines.
Local election officials noted that the effort to resolve the backlog required significant labor from county workers to ensure eligible voters could participate in upcoming elections.
