Texas Tech University faces lawsuit over AI-driven curriculum changes

The Texas Tech University system is facing legal challenges and faculty scrutiny following the implementation of an AI-assisted curriculum review process. Chancellor Brandon Creighton, a former state legislator who authored legislation banning DEI initiatives in Texas, is leading the effort to identify and remove content deemed problematic or left-leaning.

Faculty members have reported receiving AI-generated reports outlining subjects they are restricted from teaching, leading to concerns regarding self-censorship. Some professors noted that topics involving sexual orientation, gender identity, and specific historical contexts, such as the Holocaust, are being reclassified or sidelined.

The American Association of University Professors has filed a lawsuit against the university, alleging that these changes constitute viewpoint discrimination and violate First Amendment rights. Creighton has defended the initiative, stating the goal is to eliminate “garbage in curriculum” and create a national model for academic excellence.
