Texas Tech University researchers study natural compounds for diabetes management
Researchers at Texas Tech University have published a narrative review in the journal Nutrients, synthesizing decades of mechanistic, preclinical, and clinical literature regarding the role of natural bioactive compounds in managing diabetes.
The study evaluated plant-derived polyphenols, functional foods, culinary spices, and traditional remedies such as turmeric, cinnamon, and honey. The authors found that several natural compounds may influence biological processes associated with diabetic complications, including cellular oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction.
While the review addressed both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the majority of supporting evidence pertains to type 2 diabetes (T2DM). The researchers noted that while these compounds show potential for influencing metabolic regulation, evidence confirming that these effects prevent vascular damage in patients remains limited.
