Judge recused from Karmelo Anthony murder appeal case
A Texas judge has been recused from the Karmelo Anthony murder appeal case following concerns regarding impartiality. Visiting Judge Sid Harle granted the request to remove State District Judge John Roach Jr. from further proceedings in Collin County.
Anthony, 19, was convicted in June for the 2025 fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison. The defense’s motion for recusal centered on Judge Roach’s post-trial conduct, specifically an on-camera interview where he discussed the verdict and expressed his belief that the jury reached the correct decision.
Anthony’s legal team is also seeking a new trial, alleging several procedural errors. These include restrictive courtroom rules that limited media access, improper jury instructions, and a claim that Anthony was coerced into waiving his right to testify due to a dispute over an evidentiary agreement. The case has drawn significant attention due to the racial dynamics involved, as Anthony is Black and Metcalf was white; the original jury contained no Black members.
Retired District Judge Michael Chitty has been appointed to preside over the upcoming hearing regarding the motion for a new trial.
