Texas Teen Shot by Police After Mistaken Gun Claim Sparks Investigation

A 17-year-old Black male in Austin, Texas was fatally shot by police on July 24 after officers responded to a 911 call reporting an armed suspect. The caller, later identified as the teen himself, said the youth had a handgun in his waistband. When officers arrived at the park on Baden Lane, the teen lifted his sweatshirt and reached toward his waistband. Within seconds, three officers fired their weapons, killing the teenager. Subsequent investigation revealed the object in his waistband was a plastic water bottle, not a gun.

Austin Police Department Chief Lisa Davis described the incident as a rapidly evolving situation and suggested the shooting could be viewed as a "potentially a suicide by police."
