Texas think tank accuses Houston education coalition of using socialist tactics

The Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) has released a report accusing Community Voices for Public Education (CVPE) of using socialist-aligned tactics to advance what it describes as a radical agenda in public schools. The conservative think tank contends that while CVPE presents itself as a grassroots alliance of parents and educators, it actually functions as a vehicle for teachers’ unions and left-wing organizations intended to protect the existing educational system.

CVPE has been a vocal opponent of the 2023 takeover of the Houston Independent School District (HISD) by the Texas Education Agency. The state intervention followed years of academic underperformance at various campuses. While critics have labeled the takeover as political overreach, state data indicates academic improvements since the intervention, including rising reading and math scores on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and an increase in campuses receiving A or B ratings.
