Texas to receive $7.5 billion in federal border security reimbursement

Texas is set to receive $7.5 billion in federal funds to reimburse the state for border security expenditures. Governor Greg Abbott announced the funding following discussions with U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

The reimbursement will be distributed through the State Border Security Reinforcement Fund, which was established under the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This $10 billion program provides grants to state and local governments to cover eligible border security activities, including the construction of barriers, land preparation for infrastructure, and the detection of illicit drugs and illegal entrants.

Since launching Operation Lone Star in 2021, Texas reports spending between $10 billion and $11 billion on border security efforts involving the Texas National Guard, Department of Public Safety troopers, and various surveillance technologies. The state claims these efforts have resulted in a reduction of illegal border crossings by more than 80%. Texas submitted its application for this specific reimbursement to the Department of Homeland Security in June.
