Texas voter registration hits record 19 million ahead of midterms

Texas voter registration has reached a record high of 19,041,684 ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, according to Texas Secretary of State Robert Howden. This figure represents more than half of the state's population and marks a significant increase from previous years when registration numbers typically hovered around 13 million.

Data indicates a 2.2% increase from the November 2024 general election and a 2% increase from the March 2026 primary. Growth has been particularly notable in fast-growing suburban counties such as Kaufman, Waller, Ellis, and Hays. Conversely, Tarrant County saw a 2.6% decrease in registered voters compared to four years ago.

The registration surge follows the resolution of a significant backlog. Officials recently addressed an issue where approximately 500,000 voter applications remained unprocessed due to a software error in the Texas Department of Public Safety web portal. This error had prevented applications from being sent to counties, but the backlog has since been cleared.
