Texas voter registration hits record 19 million ahead of midterms

Texas has reached a record 19,041,684 registered voters ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, according to Secretary of State Robert Howden. This figure represents a 2.2% increase from the November 2024 general election and a 7.7% increase from the 2022 midterms. Significant growth was noted in suburban counties such as Kaufman, Waller, Ellis, and Hays.

Despite the record numbers, the state has faced several administrative challenges. Officials recently resolved a backlog of approximately 500,000 voter applications caused by a software error in the Texas Department of Public Safety web portal. Additionally, a separate error affecting address updates has impacted roughly 15,000 registration records, prompting concerns among local election officials.

Furthermore, the state's voter suspense list—which includes voters whose addresses could not be verified—has grown to nearly 1.8 million people, approximately 9% of the registered population. While being on the list does not prevent voting, those who have moved within their county must complete a statement of residence at the polling location.

Early voting is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 19, and will continue through Friday, October 30. Voters are reminded to bring an approved form of photo identification to the polls.
