Texas woman sues Students for Life over abortion pill advocacy

A Texas woman, identified by the pseudonym Maria Puerto, has filed a lawsuit in Harris County against Students for Life of America (SFLA), its president Kristan Hawkins, and three staff members. The lawsuit alleges that the organization’s advocacy and actions regarding pro-life laws prevented the plaintiff from accessing abortions in 2022 and 2024.

The legal action seeks $459,782, which the plaintiff describes as the average cost of raising two children in Texas. The suit specifically references an Instagram post from March in which SFLA members claimed to be “ordering abortion pills undercover” to demonstrate how easily they can be imported into pro-life states.

The lawsuit attempts to utilize the Woman and Child Protection Act, a 2025 Texas law that prohibits the manufacture, possession, or distribution of abortion-inducing drugs within the state. While the law allows for qui tam actions by private citizens to enforce restrictions, legal analysts note that the statute includes provisions stating it does not apply to purchases made for purposes other than performing or assisting an abortion. The litigation aims to highlight the broad scope and potential vagueness of the legislation.
