Texcoco Bishop issues decree against liturgical abuses

Bishop Carlos Enrique Samaniego of the Diocese of Texcoco, located in the State of Mexico, has issued a decree to prevent irregular practices that he claims deform the priestly ministry and the sanctity of liturgical acts.

The prelate expressed concern regarding religious celebrations held in unapproved locations, such as gardens, halls, and private homes. He noted that these settings are being used by “pseudo-ordained ministers” and “celebrants” who damage ecclesiastical communion.

Under the new regulations, any layperson not formally instituted in the stable ministry of acolyte is prohibited from presiding over celebrations of the Word, funerals, sacramentals, or any other liturgical acts reserved for ordained ministers. The decree also strictly forbids the use of the alb or any sacred vestments reserved exclusively for the clergy, whether during or outside of liturgical acts.

Bishop Samaniego also instructed priests to ensure they do not permit, consent to, or promote such illicit practices. He emphasized that safeguarding the true identity of ordained ministers is essential to avoid “abuse, confusion, deception, and fraud against the People of God.”
