Textile experts warn against storing damp clothing
Experts in organization and textile conservation emphasize the importance of ensuring clothes are completely dry before storing them to prevent hygiene and preservation issues.
Residual moisture, often trapped in internal fibers and dense seams of heavy fabrics like denim or towels, can create a microclimate conducive to the growth of mold and bacteria. Once established, mold spores can spread within enclosed spaces like wardrobes, potentially contaminating other clean items and damaging furniture.
Beyond health risks and unpleasant odors, trapped moisture can cause irreversible physical damage to textiles. Prolonged exposure to water weakens fibers such as cotton and linen, making them more prone to tearing and deformation. Additionally, moisture can cause permanent dark stains that are difficult to remove even with intensive washing.
