Textile industry faces gaps between recycling goals and technical reality

The textile industry is facing significant challenges as it transitions toward a circular economy, according to recent industry reports. An investigation by Südwesttextil highlights a gap between political objectives and the current technical and economic realities of textile recycling. While policies like the Ecodesign Regulation and extended producer responsibility (EPR) aim to drive sustainability, a widespread, industrially viable fiber-to-fiber recycling system for the majority of textile waste does not yet exist. Current obstacles include mixed textiles, dyes, and the high costs of sorting and pretreatment.

In Austria, the focus is shifting toward the collection and reuse of post-consumer textiles. As the prevalence of fast fashion lowers the quality of collected materials, organizations like Re-Use Austria are examining how to maintain high-quality reuse systems under new European frameworks. Upcoming discussions at the ÖWAV seminar will address how social enterprises can adapt to changing market conditions and how reuse can be integrated into the broader EPR framework to ensure long-term economic and ecological viability.
